AutoCAD is a commercial CAD program from the company Autodesk. It was first released in December 1982 as a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers, and it was originally known as Advanced Graphic System (AGS).
In 1991, Autodesk rebranded the program, changing the name to AutoCAD. The name change was based on the fact that users were beginning to get accustomed to the keyboard shortcuts and mouse movements associated with the mouse. It also symbolized that the company was moving away from its beginnings as a company that made drafting tools to one that was focused on computer-aided design. AutoCAD 2.0 was released in 1993, and AutoCAD 3.0 in 1995. In 1996, the program was released as an integrated Windows-based program, but was also available as a DOS-based program.
AutoCAD 3.5 (released in 1998) featured the introduction of a completely new drawing experience, based on the.NET Framework and a new programming environment. The program allowed for the creation of models, drawings, and drawings that could be interactively changed and edited, using the drag-and-drop, keyboard shortcuts, and other familiar CAD navigation and editing features.
AutoCAD X version 1.0 (1999), the first major revision of the program since the 3.5 release, marked the program’s move from DOS to Windows, as well as to the.NET Framework. The model component is represented in a format that can be viewed and edited by various different users without modification to the original data, and is used to store and transfer data about the geometry. While the term model is commonly used in CAD to refer to the entire drawing, it is also commonly used to refer to the geometric model representation, which is a subset of the full-fledged model. The Autodesk® DWG® (.DWG) specification defines the model as the geometric representation of the design model.
The first interactive CAD program was designed by Howard Reiss in 1956 as a modified version of an earlier drawing program named “Projectionist”. Reiss sold Projectionist to the IBM Corp. in 1959 for $60,000. Reiss’ next drawing program, called CAD-8, was released to the public in 1965.
The original name for the program was “Microstation”, after the Computer Stations sold by the IBM Corp. In 1966, the name was changed to “CAD-2” and in 1967 to “CAD-10” when IBM issued a new version. The first Mac OS version was released in 1978, named “CAD-72”. The first version for the personal computer (PC) was released in 1980, named “CAD-101” (a reference to the year 1980).
In 1989, the name was changed to “AutoCAD”, after Autodesk Inc. was founded in 1980. In 2007, Autodesk released its first iPad/iPhone application to view AutoCAD drawings, which is the first application to run on a tablet or smartphone.

The experiment is the first such so-called fast-neutron-bomb method for exploring the superconducting properties of nickel.
“Our goal is to understand the superconducting properties of materials for national defense,” says Sanjay Jain, a Livermore physicist who is working on the project.
“And we are the only lab that has this capacity,” he says.
In conventional materials, the pairing of electrons into a single quantum state to make the metal superconducting reduces the electrical resistance of the material to zero, making it useful for a variety of applications. “Superconductivity, the holy grail of the electricity industry, is finding it’s way to military applications as well, and that is what we are working on,” Jain says.
He and other Livermore scientists spent more than 20 years researching and perfecting the technology for their nickel experiment, the Livermore Instrument for Superconductor Insulator Transition Measurements (LISiT). The method is still used today by a few other laboratories, notably by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
