ASCII Encoding is a small, simple application specially designed to enable users to set the bits of a byte individually, showing the corresponding ASCII character.
The original ASCII code was a 7-bit code, being able to encode all characters of the English language and several special characters, such as a dot or a semicolon. However, this original code did not encode, for example, the umlauts of some of the European languages.
Thus the ASCII code was extended by 1 bit (8-bit ASCII code) to encode these characters as well. The next extension of the ASCII code (from 8 bit to 16 bits) resulted in the UniCode which maps the characters of almost any language of the world. In a file saved in ASCII Encoding, there is a list of codes for each character.
Each code is named “code point”, and has a number in the range of 1 to 65535. It is represented by two hexadecimal digits, separated by a hyphen.
The first digit is “10” if it is above or “8” if it is below.
For example:
‘a’ has code point 7 (37)
‘è’ has code point 418 (10001E)

If the character has a special meaning, then the number is preceded by a “thicker” digit:
‘*’ has code point 1 (10)
‘+’ has code point 2 (20)
‘-‘ has code point 5 (50)
‘%’ has code point 33 (10001)

If a character is not in the ASCII code, then the number is preceded by a “thinner” digit:
“-” has code point 3 (30)
“&” has code point 4 (40)
“(” has code point 5 (50)
“)” has code point 6 (60)
“‘” has code point 7 (70)

For example:
‘á’ has code point 2 (20)

You can set the bits in the byte individually by typing the character, then pressing the “ASCII Encoding” button. The “ASCII Encoding” button is in the toolbar. This button will allow you to change the digits of each byte of the current file to the character of your choice, as long as the code point is in the range 1 to 65535. For example, you can type the name of your preferred editor, then press the “ASCII Encoding” button, and change the digits of the corresponding byte to “w”.
For example:
The following list of codes represents the same file, but the byte has the first digit changed from “8” to “w”:

The application is a free, small application, and is based on a simple concept: binary values of bytes are directly mapped to the characters that they represent. That’s why the application is called “Binary to ASCII Encoding”.

Usage:

This application allows you to set individual bits of a byte, which results in the corresponding ASCII characters. If you do not understand, it is as simple as that: On a PC, for example, press and hold the left mouse button, and move the cursor over the values that you want to change. Then release the left mouse button. The result will be the selected bits (in red). You can then press and hold the right mouse button, and the selected bits will be mapped to the corresponding character.

Commands:

The application provides you with four different commands:

(copy the selected bits in the current buffer or in the clipboard)

(select the first, second, third or fourth bit of a byte (1 to 4 bits))

(select a byte range for copy or print)

(select a single byte for copy or print)
